Topics getting the most attention in Monroe public meetings, ranked by how frequently they come up.
2026-2027 Road Paving Program
The city's annual asphalt paving program was up for contract award, meaning potholes and repaving across Monroe for the coming year.
Runway and Taxiway Pavement Enhancement (EQY-SPAM)
The apron will be fully rebuilt with federal and state funds, then the winding taxiway strengthened, and finally the runway upgraded from 65,000 to 95,000 pounds — six to eight years out. Today, big jets must limit fuel and passengers to land.
I-77 South Toll Lane Project regional support
The regional transportation planning organization voted in May 2026 to rescind support for the I-77 South Toll Lane project, and Monroe's delegate voted with that majority despite a decade of city support for the project. Monroe's council wanted to formally reaffirm its backing and push CRTPO to reconsider, arguing the corridor is vital for freight, commerce, and the regional economy.
Powell Bill road funding request
Monroe owns 174 miles of road — more than almost any town its size — and is asking legislators for a 10% boost to Powell Bill street aid, worth about $150,000, plus protection of two special provisions that keep the state from shortchanging cities. The city itself has a $6 million-a-year paving program.
